It takes about 5 - 10 minutes to get downtown and is south east of the town of Decatur. Avondale's downtown is filled with cute shops and great restaurants. Avondale Estates has a small town feel. Traditional neighborhoods share a wonderful setting with a healthy, vibrant downtown area. All of the residents of Avondale Estates enjoy a charming, gentle pace of a small town and neighbors who go out of their way to get to know each other and take time to greet fellow residents and friends. History In 1924 George Francis Willis founded Avondale Estates. He then purchased the entire village of Ingleside to create a planned community. The city was named after Stratford-upon-Avon, England, birthplace of Shakespeare. The buildings downtown were designed in a Tudor style to reinforce this image, as were many of the houses in the city. A lake, tennis courts, clubhouse, and a swimming pool were built as community amenities for residents. Avondale Estates is the birthplace of the Waffle House chain; the first restaurant opened in the city in 1955. Demographics According to the 2000 census, there were 2,609 people, 1,226 households, and 711 families residing in the Avondale Estates. The racial makeup of the Avondale Estates was 88.77% White, 8.62% African American, 0.15% Native American, 1.03% Asian, 0.27% from other races, and 1.15% from multiple races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.53% of the population. Of the 1,226 households, 20.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.0% were non-families. Individuals made up 32.8% of all households and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The typical household size was 2.11 and the average family size was 2.68. The average income for a household in the city was $70,625, and the average income for a family was $92,341. The per capita revenue for the city was $42,605. About 1.6% of families and 2.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.5% of those under age 18 and 4.8% of those age 65 or over.
